Social Computing is more than just social media
We had a bit of an internal debate regarding the miasma of acronyms and lingo floating around that describe the space we've been working in since 2003, lingo includes: social media, web 2.0, CGM (consumer generated media), etc... We decided that none of these were descriptive enough or broad enough to describe the enormous changes happening. We set about to define social media.
Social computing is more than a new media channel. It is a global shift in the way people communicate and make their product and purchasing decisions. This radical change is driven by a set of technologies such as: blogs, web forums, social media and social networking sites that facilitate social interaction and sharing without respect to the borders of location or strict confines of time.
As the Guttenberg press enabled the spread of the printed word, social computing technologies allow people to vastly expand the network of people with whom they share experiences and opinions on ideas and products....
